Product Feedback & Reviews

I have a Tribolonotus gracilis (Red Eye Crocodile Skink), trib for short, under one of Bob Macs 60 watt EB mercury vapor lamps and he loves it. I keep it about 18 in. away, it keeps his hot spot between 85-90 deg. with around 150 uw/cm2 of uvb. I have my little guys setup where he doesn't have to come out completely under the lamp to get some uvb exposure although he does sometimes. My skink has had no eye problems at all in fact he perked up a lot after I replaced his flor. tubes with the MV lamp,

"The MegaRay is working great, my iguana thanks you! Before he wasn't too keen on the basking spot. He prefered to hang out under the CHE, but now with the megaray he stays in the basking spot for hours!"

"Yes! I can see a difference in all three of them! Iggy is soooooooo much brighter in color and all three of them have increased their appetite and seem so much more active. Bam-Bam is really hard to keep in her cage because, I'm guessing that she feels so much better now with the right lights."

I'm writing to confirm that the new Megaray 60wtEB Flood Kit is certainly everything it claims to be.

When I set up the light, I used my new Solarmeter UVB Meter to measure the output, which I found to be exactly as stated. I adjusted the position of my lamp in the viv until the main basking shelf, (in front of the lamp and about 12” below it) falls within what I think of as the "beneficial zone" – an area receiving between 50 uW/cm2 and 300 uW/cm2, ideal for my bearded dragons. Because the Megaray is a “Narrow Flood” lamp, this area is huge; it covers nearly 18” of basking shelf. A climbing ramp directly beneath the lamp, at a distance of at least 20”, is also well within the “beneficial zone”.

I introduced two bearded dragons to the vivarium when my tests were complete.

The response of these two has really surprised me. Their behaviour has changed overnight. These two are sisters, just over a year old, bought as babies. They have always been small, and one is quite definitely undersized for her age. They have always been timid and unusually shy, unlike my other dragons; they have been housed both together and separately, and despite all manner of encouragement have always tended to hide in corners, avoiding their basking spots and fluorescent UVB tubes wherever I have placed them in an attempt to keep these funny little creatures healthy.

When I put them into the viv with the Megaray, I expected them to avoid the main basking branch as it is quite exposed; I left the UVB fluorescent tubes running at each side of the viv to cover the corner shelves where I guessed they would hide. Instead, they chose to sit right in the middle, under the Megaray. They have not tried to hide since I put them in there. They are exploring, eating, and their whole demeanor has changed into that which I associate with happy bearded dragons- upright stance, jaunty expressions, and light, bright orange colouration.

I am eagerly watching to see whether this change is permanent. If it is... I want one of these lamps in each of my vivaria as soon as possible, I can tell you....
Sincerely, Frances B

I highly recommend getting a Mega-Ray® EB Flood from www.reptileuv.com for your UVB. The system is about $75 with replacement lamps being right around $45. It doesn't come with a fixture to put the lamp in so buy one of those, with a ceramic socket (they last MUCH longer than plastic sockets), at your local Home Depot or similar store. They're exactly the same as the ones in the pet stores, but they are 1/4 the cost. I have had one for about two weeks now, and both of my igs are showing increased appetite, and activity levels. My female, who has been recovering over the last couple of months from a near fatal bite inflicted by my male ig, is suddenly even regaining control of her left arm, which had been partially paralyzed due to the nerve damage caused by the bite. Anyway, I don't know what other UVB sources are capable of, but this one is DEFINTELY doing wonderful, miraculous things for the condition of my little girl. She actually squeaked at me one evening when I was trying to get her to go to bed. I had no idea iguanas could squeak, but she did. She was extremely frustrated with being pulled out from underneath her new light, and fought me so hard she squeaked.

As some of you know, I had problems with my first Mega-Ray®, but BobMac gave me extraordinary personal service to make sure I got a product I was happy with. He has sent my malfunctioning bulb back to the manufacturer to have them examine it and see if they can strengthen a possible weakness and make the product even better.
